A sample family drawn by the layout engine. Row I: Ada Linden, Tomas Linden. Row II: Clara Haddad, Omar Haddad, Henrik Linden, Mei Tanaka, Ines Linden. Row III: Noor Haddad, Adam Haddad, Hana Okafor, Sami Linden, Elif Demir. Row IV: Lena Linden, Theo Linden.

How a tree builds itself

Scroll, and the same engine that runs the editor adds a sample family one step at a time. You never drag a box into place.

The Linden family is a made-up sample.

  1. Step 1 of 5

    One person

Start with anyone: yourself, a grandparent, the person you know most about. They sit on row I.

    Row I: Ada Linden.
  2. Step 2 of 5

    A partner

A partner joins the same row, side by side. A double line means married.

Added in this step: Tomas Linden on row I.
  3. Step 3 of 5

    Their children

Children go one row down and hang from the line between their parents. Row II opens.

Added in this step: Clara Haddad, Henrik Linden, Ines Linden on row II.
  4. Step 4 of 5

    Grandchildren

Partners marry in, and the next generation takes row III. Branches move apart so nothing overlaps.

Added in this step: Omar Haddad, Mei Tanaka on row II. Noor Haddad, Adam Haddad, Sami Linden on row III.
  5. Step 5 of 5

    Remarriage and adoption

Sami divorced, remarried and adopted Theo. A dashed line marks the divorce, a dotted line the adoption. Real families fit too.

Added in this step: Hana Okafor, Elif Demir on row III. Lena Linden, Theo Linden on row IV.

Rearrange by dragging

Pick up any card and drop it where it belongs. The rows re-flow around it.

Between siblings
Drop a card between brothers and sisters to change their order.
On a person
Drop it on someone and choose: child, partner or parent. Only moves that make sense are offered.
Undo
Every drop is one step. Ctrl+Z puts it back.
Demo: Ines is dragged to the start of her row, and her siblings move over.
